About MeI'm Konrad Carter

My canvases are generally large, vivid, and filled with emotional focal points, and I play right to the edges. These are bold, diverse works—not representational, but exaggerations of simple moments in life as I have seen them.

I’m a US Army veteran, born in Oregon and raised in the suburbs north of Seattle. I hold a master’s degree in Public Administration (somewhat uncommon among artists) and spent my career in Southern California government (that too).

When I retired to the Coachella Valley, I was struck by the colors and vibrancy of the desert. The boundless vitality surrounding me sparked my creative passion, and although I lacked any formal training, I listened to my calling, picked up a paintbrush, and started to create.

My compulsion is not just to invite the viewer to feel a moment in life as I have, but to lay bare my own raw impressions and emotions. My approach is gestural, nonobjective, energetic, and filled with movement. The entire painting surface is activated.

For thirty-plus years, I administered programs and managed services for the people of Los Angeles, including the Mayor, City Council and various departments and agencies as legislatively required.  Then I moved to Palm Springs, picked up a brush, and now—I have no rules.
